Friends of the Encino-Tarzana Library

Letter From the FOL President

December, 2021

Happy Holidays to All.

As 2021 comes to a close, we are looking forward with hope that our Friends once again will be allowed to return to the Encino-Tarzana Branch Library and resume our volunteer activities.

As you are all aware, the Central Library has requested that all Friends volunteers must have proof of COVID vaccination and present a valid form of ID. This can be accomplished via video call from December 6-17. You can schedule an appointment at vaccine verification appointment online or by calling 213-228-7490, or by calling our Branch at 818-343-1983.

After almost 4 years, we are finally closing in on refurbishing the Children’s Section of the Library. The new carpet squares are in, the “bunker” has been removed, and we are now waiting for the wall under the windows to be painted. It’s been a long slog through a lot of bureaucratic red tape, but we are almost there.

Our Annual Meeting was productive. We have agreed that the elected officers will continue to serve in their respective positions for another year. We also agreed to rollover current membership dues through 2022.

The Board has created two Ad Hoc Committees. One Committee will work with a non-profit attorney to restate the FOL’s By-Laws. Some of the things we are exploring are: adding the ability for proxy voting; limiting the stated committees to those we actually have; changing the name of the elected Board members to the Executive Board; memorializing the process by which the FOL distributes monies to the Branch’s request for funds and how those requests are presented to the FOL; and possibly granting monies to a few of our active senior teens for the purchase of college textbooks, based on need and the recommendation of our young adult librarian, through the Branch, and the funds being available.

The second Ad Hoc Committee is creating a program to celebrate the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Friends of the Encino-Tarzana Branch Library this coming February, 2022. If you have any photographs and/or remembrances you’d like to share or you would like to help with this project, please contact me.

We have not been able to raise and funds for the past two years. We have determined that we are not in a position to fund the Branch for this coming year. We allowed them to carry over 2020 funds into 2021, but those funds have now been accounted for.

We are still waiting for the City Library to send us a breakdown of their requested $ 25,861.00 which we paid for the refurbishing of the Children’s Section. Beryl Arbit, Treasurer, has made six attempts to get this information as backup information as to how the City spent our donation, but to no avail. We will keep on trying, as we have an obligation to our supporters to tell them how the City Library came to this amount and exactly on what it was spent.

We are looking to start a program of events and outings for our volunteers. We have a very capable new member, Aliki Stlianos, who is interested in putting these programs together. I hope that many of you will be interested in taking advantage of these events.

We are working on a viable system with Jane Dobija, our Head Librarian, whereby once we are allowed back in the Branch, we will be able to accept and sort donations, get our Book Store up and running again, and have our sales. As this information comes into focus, we will keep you informed.

I sincerely hope we all have a healthy and happy New Year, and that the Friends will once again come together in person in the Library to continue our valuable volunteer work. Thank you all for being so patient.
